Seal it baby...SEAL IT!!

Obviously we learned sealants today!! OH MY HOW FUN!! I honestly liked clinic today! It was a little scary at first because Hello...Im sealing off a tooth! Not ok! But in these instances it is ok because we want to protect from cavities! Hailey was my partner and we had fun! We had plenty of teeth to seal, but sadly we could only seal one. But hey, thats one less tooth at risk, right?! Right! Clinic is getting down to the nitty gritty, and it is freakin me out! We will be seeing patients in no time! Its Halloween today, and man did that spring up on us fast! Next thing ya know, Thanksgiving will be here....wow! That is disgusting! haha
I wish I was little because I miss dressing up and going trick-or-treating and getting millions of pieces of candy! Oh those were the good ole days! Wish I was a kid again...just for tonight!!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

We dont just polish our shoes silly, we polish TEETH!!!

Ok so in a nutshell, we did all of the following in clinic today:

  • Air/Powder Polishing (Might I add, that sucker KILLS!!)

  • Selective Polishing (Fun!)

  • Fluoride Varnish ( Oh sweet heavens, that stuff is caca!)

So sweet Erin was my partner! Love her!! I went first in her chair while she was the operator, and then I was second. The best part of today was the word REVENGE! hahaha jk just kidding, it really wasnt but we had fun!! With the "sand blaster" it literally rips off your gums, cheeks, lips, and tongue! You must be VERY careful in where you point that thing! Its a crazy little bugger! So good old erin was just practicing all her stuff on me and blowin my face away! Then she puts on the varnish...da da DA! You sweep the brush with one complete stroke and move on! Well lets just say, Erin DID get the concept of fluoride varnish!! Ü hahaha

Im totally just kidding! Erin was amazing! She always is! We just laugh practically the whole time and try to be good at whatever was taught!! WE had fun!

And just a side note!....When I was her operator...you best believe I learned fluoride varnish VERY well! Ü

Passed some PE's off today! Clinic was good!

Treatment Planning

Today was so nice! Easy day. We passed off OHI and learned how to make a treatment plan for our patients. It was much needed today. Nothing much to talk about today, but overall it was nice. We have Prof. Costley's Exam 2 this week, and life will be good once we get that out of the way. I will be studying all night long for it!! Yikes!

Curets...yuck.

Soo...today sucked! I know your probably thinking..."Wow, alittle harsh" right? But today I am just going to vent, because I can!!
I hated clinic! Honestly, I have not felt so inadequate and frustrated more than I did today within those 4 hours. Let me give you some background info first. I have not...I repeat..I HAVE NOT been able to practice posterior scaling AT ALL!! We BARELY get enough time to do everything we have to do in clinic, so that leaves us with zero time for practicing pe's. And its not like we can practice at home all the time, because we have a junk load of exams, quizzes, assignments to do every single week. Am I venting?....yes! Ü Can you tell I am frustrated?! Yes!! Anyways, today was the day posterior curet pe was due. Freaking out just a little would be the understatement of the year!!! So, cute April was my patient today! I just love her to pieces. She was so patient with me and my practicing, that I did not even get to disclose her or even give OHI. Ridiculous right?!! I swear so much is squeezed into a 4 hour clinic that I dont ever have time for anything!! Instructor Hafen was kind enough to watch me and give me hints and tips about what I needed to work on, etc. She is just fabulous. Honestly, if all teachers were just like her, every child would walk away UNDERSTANDING and GAINING so much more than they ever expected. Brilliant lady I tell ya! Love her!! Good news is....I PASSED. Bad news is, I still dont like clinic...shocker right? Im sure I will....eventually...but as of right now, I dont. And I think I have the right to feel like that haha!
Side note: FALL BREAK IS FINALLY HERE!! Geez Louise its been ages since we have had a break. Its about dang time!! Of course I will be relaxing and doing anything but homework! Ü

Cheese....your on Candid Camera!

So today in clinic was...lets just say....ROUGH!! Seriously! We did not meet in the instructors pod to cover todays activities. Instead we all get a surprise and get to seat our patient and start with everything we have learned. WOW!! NOT COOL!! We were all freaking out, but after we figured it out, then we were all on a roll. It seemed like I forgot EVERYTHING. Seriously. It was rough. We have been learning everything in chunks so its difficult to put it all together. I forgot when I needed a signature, etc. Oh well atleast we got help. It was nice, but scary all at once. I still feel awkward and weird, but with time it will come. I passed off anterior scaling and angulation, adaptation, and activiation pe today. It was one busy day, but luckily we survived....barely!
On another note....FOOTLOOSE WAS AMAZING!!! WHOOP WHOOP!!

All I talk about is TEETH!

So ladies and gents...what do you think my blog is about today?!! Any guesses?.....did you say teeth?.....guess what....YOU RIGHTTTTTT!!!! Hello, do I EVER post about anything else? (Besides the fact that FOOTLOOSE will be touching our lives in two magnificant days!! YES 2! Numero Dose!! AHHHH I CAN NOT WAIT!!
ANYWAYS...lets get back to the only thing that takes over my life, the
ony thing I focus all my attention on, SCHOOL!!!
So today in clinic we learned how to Dental chart. So lucky me, I got to work on my dear friend Laken. So first and foremost, I would just like to say this girl has a twinner mouth just like myself!! See, when you look in someones mouth on a day to day basis, (well almost day to day) you really get to see them on a different level! haha That sounded so awkward, but just go with it!! As I was exploring through her mouth with my mirror and explorer, of course, I found out that Laken is missing both her 1st premolars on her maxillae like me!! That is about the only "twin" thing we have. She has her 1st premolars on her mandible gone as well, because according to her, "She has huge horse teeth, so the Dentist had to pull those horse teeth so all her teeth could fit into her mouth!"
That was possibly the most exciting thing in that mouth! Lame I know! Ü
After charting, I was able to practice my anterior scaling on Mrs. Hintze! She is such a trooper, all I do is poke at her and Im STILL allowed to be her friend. Geez Louise, how did I get so lucky with amazing pod buds! I had a couple AHA MOMENTS as well today!!
AHA MOMENT #1: Tip ALWAYS stays on the tooth, and you HAVE to adapt on anteriors super duper quick, or blood comes!
AHA MOMENT #2: You use an exploratory stroke with your instrument, AS SOON as you "get stuck" apply Lateral Pressure to the tooth, and pull towards the tooth AND the tip. CAUTION: DO NOT PULL BACK!!! Dang us first years! Ü
Overall, clinic was not bad!! I didn't hate it, and I didn't love it, so that is still ok! We are improving on the "hate!"

Purple. People. Eater.

Today in clinic was actually fun/enjoyable. Yahoo, right! I am always so stressed that it never feels like I can have fun with it, because Im constantly freaking out about a PE needing to be passed off!! Today we were switched up and put with different partners in clinic today! Michelle was my patient/operator! We had lots of fun looking at each others mouths! Its kind of nice sometimes to switch it up and check out different mouths. Michelle was so kind, even when I practiced my scaling on her!! Poor girl, I poked her SOOO MANY TIMES, but she got pay back! haha I love clinic because if you think your going to leave without your gums bleeding, think again! It will happen!! But we used disclosing agent today, ya know the purple stuff that you swoosh around in your mouth to see where you missed with brushing/flossing. It was really neat because it actually makes you realize where you are missing and you actually have to take accountablility for it, you cant blame it on anything else. So disclosing agents + you = you fessing up to what you missed! I actually was surprised to see what my PFI index score was and see where I miss! Definitely a heads up, and makes you realize what you need to fix and do better! If only our patients (real patients) would learn! I loved the disclosing agent so much, that I really want to get some and take it around the town and just show people what they are missing!! Think of how FUN that would be!! Everyone with purple and pink mouths!!
P.s. DANCING WITH THE STARS IS ON TONIGHT!!!! OHHHH YA!!
And....FOOTLOOSE COMES OUT FRIDAY!!!!!! I CANT WAIT!!!!

Scaling with the Curets!!!

Ok first things first.....MODERN FAMILY IS TOTALLY ON TONIGHT!!! Thank heavens!! I need some laughter tonight!!
Clinic today was STRESSFUL!! I had two PE's to pass off...yep thats right folks numero dose!!! Ya kill me!!! I could not sleep last night because all I was thinking about was how to PROBE AND EXPLORE!! Yuck! Like seriously, cant a girl get some sleep!!! Anyways, I just had to go for it!! I needed to stop thinking about it and know that I CAN do this!! I dont think I will ever feel confident completely when passing off a pe, but I still feel like I know it! Thats the part I need to realize is that with practice it will come!! I passed, and I feel like I did well, I will just definitely be practicing alot!!! We learned universal curets today, and I hardly got anytime because I was practicing my probing and exploring on my dear friend erin! Oh well I will be practicing that like crazy!!! Life + School = Stressful!!
Oh just a side note....remember when I thought fulcruming was horrible?!....hahaha now i just laugh all about that!! Fulcruming is not too bad for me at all right now. See...with practice comes perfection hahaha i am far from that though!!
Enjoy your night!!! I definitely will be!

Scaling...its what Hygiene is all about.

So im thinking that right about now we have hit the mother load of all mother loads. Its that point in clinic where we have began to learn how to scale. We have been inching our way up to this point and now that we are here it scares the crap out of me!! I feel not so scared with working in the mouth as I use to be. I am not as comfortable at it quite yet, but im sure "with time" i will get there. Oh and did i mention...the PE'S ARE GETTING STACKED UP!! Seriously my life never is anything but stress! I did not pass off any PE's today, which i should have atleast passed off the explorer, but no miss chicken here was freakin out. I still want to practice and get to the point where i feel comfortable, which I am close. So anyways today I just got to learn how to do anterior scaling, worked on the typodonts, and then worked on my dear Erin!! We were laughing so hard today because Mrs. Read thought it would be fun to put her knuckle in my nostril!! haha yes it was that funny! She did not do it on purpose, it just....welll.....kind of happened while she was fulcruming! haha I didnt know what to do so i just breathed in really big and then she realized and began apologizing! We both started laughing, and that pretty much was the highlight of clinic!! Hopefully i did not trauma her gums too much, I'm sure she is ok, but still....I am not a professional yet!!! I am nervous for wednesday, but i have got to get it over with!! Wish me luck!
